General Questions

A: Why drive a nail with your fist when it is so much easier to use a hammer ? Bedtime power struggles, nighttime awakenings, early morning wake-ups… parents waste a ton of energy trying to impose discipline simply because they lack the proper tool to do so. We want you to be equipped with the best tool and we are confident in Ooly’s effectiveness for three main reasons:

1- Our prototype has been tested by local families – here’s what one of them had to say: “I was skeptical that this sleepy little owl could help with my mornings. But then the very first day my three-year-old son came in at eight instead of his usual seven. He proudly told me, ‘Ooly is green and that means time to get up!’ He loves that Ooly turns into his favorite color and I love the extra sleep. I even recommended it to my colleague to use with her little girl.” – Edith Martin, PH.D., Researcher, Topmed.ca.

2- Ooly is based on the scientific research of light and its impact on sleep carried out by NASA, Harvard Medical School, and National Institutes of Health. It is now proven that blue light inhibits the production of melatonin, delaying and disrupting sleep. Ooly is therefore equipped with a “blue blocker” mode.

3- Ooly has been designed together with five of the world’s top children sleep experts.

A: Three main aspects:

1- It is configured with an app (compatible with iOS/Apple and Android phones or tablets). Parents can effortlessly select Ooly’s color & intensity to create bedtime, morning, and naptime routines adapted to their child’s needs. They simply need to use the Ooly app to set and record the color they want for various times.

2- Ooly’s design is based on the scientific research of light and its impact on sleep. It is now proven that blue light inhibits the production of melatonin, delaying and disrupting sleep. Ooly is therefore equipped with a “Blue Blocker” mode. Ooly’s light intensity can also be reduced down to the slightest glow, preventing any disturbances to your child’s sleep.

3- It is portable and battery operated, with a battery sufficient for seven days’ operation without electricity. There is also an embedded memory to ensure settings are never lost. This means Ooly follows your child wherever they go (a week at grandma’s, camping over the weekend, on the plane, etc.). Also, there’s no need to have your mobile device around because once set up, Ooly remembers its settings forever.

A: Yes, we had that very same concern when we designed Ooly. We know Wi-Fi signals are quite strong and did not want these anywhere near our kids. For this reason, Ooly uses a technology well known for its low power emissions called “Bluetooth Low Energy” (or BLE). BLE is used in many healthcare applications. Additionally, note that Ooly only uses its radio for the setup process with the Ooly app. Once done, Ooly operates by itself.

Using Ooly

  1. Make sure Ooly’s battery isn’t drained completely. Connect Ooly to the USB charger.
  2. Make sure your phone or tablet isn’t out of range of Ooly. Bluetooth Low Energy range is 100m outdoor but reduces indoor depending on wall materials. To be sure, stay in the same room as Ooly to carry out the steps below.
  3. Make sure your phone or tablet supports Bluetooth version 4.0 or more, and that the Bluetooth radio is enabled in the general settings of your Android or iOS device.
  4. Make sure no other phones or tablets are currently connected to this Ooly, as it will prevent your phone or tablet to detect your Ooly and it won’t appear in the detected device list of your Ooly app.
  5. Quit and reopen the Ooly app:
    Android devices: https://www.wikihow.tech/Close-Apps-on-Android
    iOS/Apple devices: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330
  6. Unpair Bluetooth from your phone/tablet.

    iPhone/iPad
    Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
Tap on the little “i” icon of the Ooly device you want to remove
    Tap “Forget this Device.”
    Confirm by tapping “Forget Device.”

    Android
From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).
    Touch Settings.
    Touch Wireless & networks.
    Touch Bluetooth settings.
Touch and hold a paired bluetooth device.
    Touch Unpair.
  7. If your Ooly still does not appear in Ooly’s app detected device list, then it means Ooly is still connected at some point to a smartphone device, or the last disconnection didn’t perform successfully. To free Ooly from any previous connection, press and hold Ooly’s head button for a continuous 10 seconds. Ooly should then appear in the detected device list.
  8. If none of the steps above worked. Please contact our support.

Ooly is 100% controlled by Ooly’s mobile application. We did this because one of the biggest pain out there is kid messing up settings by pressing buttons. In addition, if the parent disable the “Lantern” mode, the hidden button on Ooly’s head will not work.

You can always turn it off from Ooly’s app. Also, if the “Cancel Mode” was enabled for that particular period, you can turn the light off with a long press on Ooly’s head.

Absolutely, parents can choose to have the light turned completely off during the night, and until the morning wake up. Ooly will do whatever you tell it to do. For example, the light could be switched off during the night, then it could switch on, let’s say at 7:00 a.m. The same way, it could be switched on during the evening, then start fading down 5 minutes before bedtime; then it would switch off.

No, a mobile phone or tablet connection is only required to configure Ooly’s schedule and settings. Once done, the connection is no longer required and Ooly works by itself. It will control its light according to the time of the day, its schedule, and the settings downloaded and stored in its memory.

Yes. Ooly’s mobile application can configure them one after the other. They can then operate by themselves with their respective schedules and settings.
